There are now three healthy looking, downy young Red-tailed Hawk kids in the
nest near our school. I glimpsed them for the first time Saturday (but I
don't know when they hatched). The three were sitting up begging a parent
for food, but the parent was too busy glaring at me and my scope 150 yards
away! Finally, when the adult said, "keeeeerrrr", the young 'uns ducked down
into the nest. Wow! Obedient children!

I took another look this afternoon, but set my scope up behind a row of
trees closer to the school and aimed it through an opening. I thought I was
being sneaky! Ha, ha! But an adult spotted me and flew to the top of a tall
Douglas Fir half way between the nest and my position and "keeeeerr"-ed
endlessly, again casting an eye in my direction. I was easily 300 yards away.

This is a really special event for our school. Our school mascot name is
"Hawks". I plan to take my scope out at recess tomorrow to take a look with
as many kids as possible.

Best wishes,
