This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Today, May 1, two HARRIS'S SPARROWS in breeding plumage, two
loudly singing WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, and a heard, but not
seen, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW are at Madame Dorian Park
according to Mike and MerryLynn Denny. Madame Dorian is at US 12
milepost 307, just north of the junction of US 12 and US 730 in
western Walla Walla Co., WA. The park is on the east side of the
highway along North Shore Road. Look for the sparrows, of which the
Harris's and White-throateds have been present all winter, along the
gravel two-track southwest of the bathrooms. WA DeLorme 40, D-1.

At the Walla Walla River Delta, which can be accessed 0.1 mile north
of Madame Dorian Park, Mike and MerryLynn had 18 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS, 5 FORESTER'S TERNS, and a single adult FRANKLIN'S GULL
on April 27, and 300 DUNLIN and 20 BLACK-NECKED STILT on April
29. There's a pull-out along US 12 at milepost 306.9 and a path to
the delta. WA DeLorme 40, D-1.

MerryLynn also spied a VIRGINIA RAIL with 2 chicks at Overview
Pond, which is just east of the US 12, US 730 junction along US 12.

Just north of this location at US 12 milepost 300.4 was a single male
LARK BUNTING on April 26. This second Walla Walla Co., WA record
was seen by Alasdiar Stewart and Holly Nelson.

I saw a single ROSS'S GOOSE with Canada Geese at Mann Lake, near
Lewiston, Nez Perce Co., ID on April 25. That same day, John
Montgomery spied a DUNLIN there as well. To get there, follow US 12
into Lewiston across the Clearwater River. Just over the river, turn
left onto East Main Street. Follow East Main to the blinking yellow
light and turn right onto Lapwai (aka Lindsay Creek) Road. At the fork,
stay right on Lindsay Creek and follow it about another 4 miles to
Grelle Avenue. Turn left on Grelle, following it to the sharp right turn.
Just past the sharp right, turn left onto Powers Avenue and follow
Powers 1 mile to the reservoir. ID DeLorme 54, A-1.

Two HARLEQUIN DUCKS were sitting on the dock of a small pond
north of Pullman, Whitman Co., WA this past week according to Doug
Flemsburg (sp?). The birds were in a pond on the northwest side of
WA 27, 13 miles north of Pullman, at milepost 13. WA 27 runs
between Pullman and Palouse. WA DeLorme 57 AB-7.5.

A single AMERICAN BITTERN was seen just east of St. Maries,
Benewah Co., ID by John Montgomery on April 29. The bird was
along Forest Highway 50 (aka St. Joe River Road) at milepost 10.3. ID
DeLorme 60, C-3.

A pair of easy-to-see BARN OWLS are 2.2 miles north of Touchet,
Walla Walla Co., WA according to Mike and MerryLynn Denny. From
the Touchet Mercantile on US 12, take the Touchet River Road north
2.2 miles and look for the owls on the cut-bank. WA DeLorme 40, D-

I had a single BLUE JAY at my feeder, 5 miles south of Moscow, Latah
Co., ID on April 28, and Dale Goble reports a single BLUE JAY in his
Moscow yard that same day, as well as April 29. You might still find
the Moscow bird between Polk Extension, Orchard Avenue, and north
of D Street.
