Dave Lauten and Kathy Castelein observed a probable Bristle-thighed Curlew
on the open beach just north of Floras Lake, Curry Co. on Wednesday
afternoon May 6.

It was a single unwary Whimbrel-like bird with a bright cinnamon rump and
barred cinnamon tail contrasting with the brown coloration of the back and
the rest of the bird. Dave is off e-mail today and I am not reposting all
of his details. They were able to approach the bird within 15 meters and
later walked around it without flushing it, so good views were obtained.

This location can only be approached on foot. The only time I was ever
there I got there by walking through water across the top of the Floras
Lake rock dam, but there may be better ways. Of course the bird may be
idling at Bandon as I type....
