At about 3;30 p.m. today, two Bristle-thighed Curlews were seen at Ocean
Shores by a Seattle Audubon Birdathon trip led by Bob Sundstrom and myself.
They were first heard calling, then seen in flight close to the base of the
Point Brown jetty -- about opposite the east end of the parking lot there.
They circled over an empty lot east of the building across the road, then
headed west toward the beach and turned north along the coast just north of
the jetty, and dropped below the dunes and out of sight. We had excellent
looks at the field marks -- Whimbrel-sized bird, with a Whimbrel-like bill,
orangish rump, and distinctive whistled call. WE could not find them along
the beach or on the golf course afterwards. Hopefully the brisk
northwesterly wind will keep them in the area and birders will have a
chance of relocating them tomorrow.
