Columbia Estuary Report - 5/10/98

One of the BRISTLE-THIGHED CURLEWS was still being seen at the
South Jetty of the Columbia River Sunday morning. At least two
possibly 3 PARASITIC JAEGERS flew over the shorebird flats to
break up the monotony. Good numbers of PACIFIC LOON are still
going by and at least one BROWN PELICAN was seen on Saturday.

A pair of REDHEAD, rare in Clatsop Co., were on Trestle Bay
Saturday.

Four WANDERING TATTLERS and a WHIMBREL were feeding on the mussel
covered rocks at Ecola State Park. 22 100 COMMON MURRES were
either on the rock or (mostly) in the ocean. At least 20 TUFTED
PUFFINS were on Haystack Rock.

A pair of HOUSE WRENS were found, apparently on territory, in a
clearcut on the Greasy Spoon Mainline off of the Nicolai Mt
mainline (DeLorme pg 71 d6). These are the first House Wrens I
have managed to find in Clatsop Co. There were also two WESTERN
BLUEBIRDS and a possible MOUNTAIN QUAIL (heard only) at this site,
as well.

The weekend shorebird count is a little jumbly this week,
representing a composite of all sites visited during NAMC,
including SJCR, Clatsop Beach, Ecola State Park, and
Wireless Rd:

Black-bellied Plover 7
Semipalmated Plover 49
Killdeer 8
Black Oystercatcher 3
Spotted Sandpiper 3
Whimbrel 1
Bristle-thighed Curlew 3

Wandering Tattler 5

Western Sandpiper 230
Least Sandpiper 21
Dunlin 518
Short-billed Dowitcher 7
Long-billed Dowitcher 2
