In Oregon, we are now entering the 4th (of 5) field seasons for our
statewide Breeding Bird Atlas Project. We cordially welcome any
Washington birders who volunteer to help us! It's pretty simple. You
have two options:
1. If you can identify most birds by song, own a 4WD vehicle, and are
able to visit Oregon for at least 3 days, we will PAY YOUR GAS to find
as many species as you can in one or more of the 12 atlas units (of
430) that we still need someone to cover this June/July. Most are in
central or southeastern Oregon, but a few are near Tri-Cities. You won't
need to cover every inch of the assigned area, and you won't need to
search for nests. You do need to contact me first, with your address and
an estimate of the number of days you can spend in Oregon, so we can send
you maps and checklists for the area(s).
2. If you don't meet the above requirements, we still are interested in
anything you see or hear, ANYWHERE in Oregon this June/July! This can
be a bird list you make in the course of doing other things -- you don't
have to do a focused "atlasing" effort. Just email me a note before
September with the location, date, species (4-letter codes are fine), and
evidence of breeding (e.g., bird carrying food or nesting material) if any
was noted. For this we can't cover your gas, but the data will certainly
be appreciated!

The Oregon BBA is sponsored by Oregon Field Ornithologists but has no paid
director or staff. This is a purely volunteer effort, and currently over
500 birders are participating.

Please spread the word to Washington birders who may not be on Tweeters.

Hope to hear from you,
