This is Dale Goble with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, May 15th.

Russ Roundy reports a pair of CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS on the
Centennial Trail east of Spokane, WA. This is the same location in
which birds have been seen for the past few years. To reach the area,
head east from Spokane on I-90. Take the Harvard Road/Liberty Lake
exit and head north on Harvard Road. Park just south of the Spokane
River in the Centennial Trail parking lot adn walk west on the trail
approximately 3/4 mile. This is approximately 1/4 mile past the 5 mile
marker on the Trail. The birds are on the south side of the Trail.

Please stay on the Trail and do not use tapes since the birds appear to
be a pair on territory.

Russ also reports BOBOLINKS singing west of Cusick, Pend Oreille
County, WA. To reach the birds, go north on Highway 20 across the
Kalispell River and turn left (west) within 100 feet on Meadow Road.
Watch for the birds on the fence posts. WA DeLorme p. 105, B:6.

Finally, Russ heard and saw an AMERICAN BITTERN on the road to
Camp Spaulding on Davis Lake. Davis Lake is south of Cusick on
Highway 211. There is a parking area on 211 at the south end of the
Lake. Park at the turn out and walk west along the Camp Spauling

On Saturday, May 9th, Charles Swift, Tom Besser, and Deborah
Stenkamp found a total of 80 species while birding a loop that began
at Idler's Rest north of Moscow and then proceeded along Mountain
View Road, Darby Road, Paradise Ridge Road to Genessee, from
Genessee to Julietta to Kendrick and the back roads from between
Kendrick and the Troy Highway.

The highlights were Wilson's Phalarope (10 on Genessee Sewage Pond
with most of the other waterfowl and 2 at the UI Sheep Pen manure
pond behind the Mall) and Solitary Sandpiper.

Also on Saturday, Jane Westervelt and Steve Kalloger birded from
Moscow, down through Walla Walla, to Pasco, and back through
Washtucna. The highlights of the trip included a BLACK-CROWNED
NIGHT HERON along the Walla Walla river, SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER at Madame Dorian park, and 5 WHITE PELICANS at the
mouth of the Walla Walla.
