Dear Tweets:

Last evening a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD hit my window. I rushed outside and found
him lying on his back in a crack on the deck, feebly struggling. I
carefully lifted him out and, with my friend's help, got him onto a towel
in a cardboard box. He lay there, heart beating a gazillion times a second,
with his little tongue sticking out (it looked like a tiny bit of spider
silk!), eyes half closed. It didn't look hopeful. I remembered my mother's
stunned bird treatment: sugar water! I quickly took the chill off some I
had stored in the frig, and used a clean eye dropper to deposit a drop on
his tongue -- to my surprise he slurped it up! A few more feedings from his
personal spigot, and he was gaining strength. I could feel him "humming" as
I supported his little head with my finger. Soon he flew up out of the box
and on his way. I felt bad about my window being the problem, but what a
thrill to interact with this special creature.
