In today's (Tuesday's) edition of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Mayor
Paul Schell proposed that, in celebration of the millennium, Seattle
illuminate city bridges, the waterfront, and downtown skyscrapers,
throughout most of 1999. Obviously, he knows nothing about the serious
risks posed by lighted structures to migratory birds. (A World Wildlife
Federation report states that more birds die from collisions with lighted
buildings each year than were lost in the Exxon Valdez oil spill.)

I plan to provide Mr. Schell's office with information about WWF's Fatal
Light Awareness Program. Perhaps other interested birders could also
express their concern to Mr. Schell.
