Given Seattle's place as a city with one of the best environments in which
to live, the concept of increased lighting of bridges and buildings seems
about the worst idea I can think of to celebrate the millennium. Using
more energy, increasing light pollution in a city where the stars are just
barely visible, and providing a great deal of lighted structures to attract
and maim birds appeals to very old concepts of grand human acheivement.
Maybe Seattle should try to lead the way into a new era, one that reflects
refinement and a sense of being a part of the natural world rather than
domination. Instead of more lighting let's remove lights and install light
fixtures that reduce light scatter.
