This is the Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society Bird Alert for May 14,

Some rather late sightings that were phoned in after the last update will
be included nevertheless because of their interest.

Mike Denny reported on April 26 a CLARK'S GREBE, 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, GRAY,
DUSKY and "WESTERN" FLYCATCHERS and a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW were present
at Crow Butte State Park. On April 27, Mike found 18 BONAPARTE'S and 1
FRANKLIN'S GULL on the Walla Walla Delta, on the 29th a VIRGINIA RAIL and 2
chicks at the overlook pond near the delta, on May 1, a VIRGINIA RAIL and
SORA on the delta.

Also on May 1, Mike Denny heard a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW at Madame Dorian
Park and Ruth Fischer reported 10 BLACK-NECKED STILTS and 4 LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHERS at the pond along Gap Road in Prosser.

On May 3, Mary Nowakowski observed 2 CHIPPING SPARROWS in her Richland yard.

Duane Faletti reported a GREAT HORNED OWL in Groves Park between Park and
Saint Streets in Richland on the evenings of May 4 & 5.

On May 6, Nancy LaFramboise, Ruth Fischer, and I (Bob Woodley) saw among
other things, a female RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, a PEREGRINE FALCON, and a
SPOTTED SANDPIPER at Crow Butte State Park; another SPOTTED SANDPIPER, a
LEAST SANDPIPER, and 5 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS at Whitcomb Island; and 2
male BLUE-WINGED TEAL, a pair of CANVASBACKS and the same shorebird species
at the Patterson Slough Unit of Umatilla NWR (near Plymouth, WA).

On May 10, Craig Corder and Judy Stevens found a TOWNSEND'S WARBLER in
Plymouth, 3 WILSON'S PHALAROPES and 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL at Patterson Slough
Unit, Umatilla NWR, and a WESTERN SANDPIPER, WARBLING and CASSIN'S VIREOS,
and a WESTERN TANAGER at Crow Butte State Park.

On May 13, Nancy LaFramboise, Ruth Fischer and I birded WE Johnson Park in
Richland and saw a SWAINSON'S HAWK, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS and a very
cooperative YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT.

Lastly, this afternoon I noted a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW in my yard.
