Subject: Curlews: the wind has changed

The wind here on the Columbia Estuary is blowing ssw at 10-15kt and
the curlews are, apparently, gone.

I went out to the SJCR at about 1400hr where I met Kevin Spencer
(at least I hope it was Kevin) and another birder who had been out
on the flats since about 1000hrs have not been able to find either
bird though they work very hard on a crab thrashing WHIMBREL which
had many people confused for a short time.

The prevailing theory was that the birds would leave with a change
in the prevailing winds. This looks to be confirmed...
