I worked for the Forest Service on the Olympic National Forest stationed
out of Quilcene, WA 25 years ago and while laying out a timber sale, my
partner and I were attacked by a Goshawk. It actually hit his hard hat!

When we located the nest site we eliminated that area from the timber
sale. Oh ya--it was a partial-cut. Not a clear cut--whew.

Is the logger to blame? Maybe I was to blame. I helped lay out timber
sales that were sold to the loggers. Why were the loggers cutting the
trees? Maybe supply and demand. Maybe all of us who live in homes built
of wood are to blame, or maybe all of us who use writing paper, or
toilet paper or anything else that is a by-product of wood are to blame.
I think that sometimes we need to step back and look at the whole
picture. We may be quite suprise at how much of an impact each of us has
on everything around us.

Changes have been made and should continue to be made, but it takes
time.

Please note that I am not railing on any one person. I have included
myself as part of the problem, and hopefully part of the solution.

The last time I saw a Goshawk was 4 years ago. It was a immature one and
was on the fence 15 feet from our window. We got a picture even though
we were not birders at that time.
