CASSIN'S VIREO
WESTERN WOOD PEWEE

Significant movements of migrant songbirds continue here on the south
coast. Check your own property, local parks and woodlots for these birds.

Tuesday, May 26
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Remnants from a very significant migrant fall-out of May 25 were still
present at Mount Tolmie in Saanich. Numbers of WESTERN WOOD PEWEE,
CASSIN'S VIREO, Warbling Vireo, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Western Tanager,
Townsend's, Wilson's, Yellow, Orange-crowned and MacGillivray's Warblers
were on Mount Tolmie those two days. Search especially on the wooded east
side of the hill. Also there was a Band-tailed Pigeon, Olive-sided
Flycatcher, and a relatively late Golden-crowned Sparrow.

WESTERN WOOD PEWEE was seen in the Cordova Bay area in the morning.

5 WESTERN TANAGERS were feeding in Oak Trees on Uplands Road at Lansdowne
in Oak Bay.

In the U-VIC woods were PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER,
WILSON'S WARBLER and a Pileated Woodpecker.

Monday, May 25
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
2 or more Vaux's Swifts and many Yellow Warblers were at Jordan River on
the southwest coast of Vancouver Island.

Numbers of BLUE GROUSE and Band-tailed Pigeons were reported from the
Sombrio Beach Trail north of Jordan River, also on the west coast of
Vancouver Island.

5 Blue-winged Teal and a Wood Duck were at Viaduct Flats in Saanich.

Evening Grosbeaks and Band-tailed Pigeons were at the Shawnigan Lake
Estates north of Victoria.

Sunday, May 24

A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was on the Cowichan sewage pond north of Duncan.

6 Pacific Loons in breeding plumage were off Island View Beach in Central
Saanich.

A pair of BULLOCK'S ORIOLES was building a nest at 1346 Munro Road in North
Saanich.

**Once again, check all Whimbrels that you might see very closely. A
number of very similar BRISTLE-THIGHED CURLEWS have been reported along the
coasts of California/Oregon/Washington to at least May 20. They may stop
off here on our beaches as they head north to Alaska.
