MAGNOLIA WARBLER
Western Wood Pewee

RARE BIRD ALERT:
On the morning of May 27, a male MAGNOLIA WARBLER, an eastern species, was
seen and heard on the east forested slope of Mt. Tolmie in Saanich. The
bird may have moved off to the residential areas to the east and could not
be relocated through the rest of the morning. Search Mt. Tolmie and the
surrounding areas for this bird. Updates would be appreciated. If
confirmed by the local Bird Records Committee this would be the second
record of MAGNOLIA WARBLER for the Victoria Checklist area.

Also at Mt. Tolmie again were WESTERN WOOD PEWEE, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATHCER, 1
or 2 BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS, numbers of Yellow, Wilson's, MacGillivray's,
and Orange-Crowned Warblers, and 1 or 2 Pacific-slope Flycatchers.

2 CASPIAN TERNS have been off Billings Spit near the mouth of the Sooke
River and Sooke Basin for up to a week.

WESTERN TANAGERS continue to appear in good numbers throughout the region.

Numbers of Pacific Golden Plovers have been noted in the Tofino area over
the past 3 weeks, especially at the Tofino airport. At least 12 individual
birds have been seen, and groups of up to 5 at a time have also been noted.

Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island is a good spot to look for
possible BRISTLE-THIGHED CURLEWS, a few of which have been seen to at least
May 20 along the California/Oregon/Washington coast as they move north to
Alaska.
