Jack and any other interested parties,
The area that the Wenas Weekend Checklist was compiled in was the
Wenas Creek drainage upstream of the dam at Wenas Lake. The ridge top of
Cleman Mountain forms the Southern boundary. The Northern boundary is
the ridge tops of Umtanum and Manastash Ridges, the top of Bald Mountain
was included in the count area although not in the Wenas Creek Drainage.
To see the entire range of habitats from grasslands to sub-alpine you
need to drive some of the back roads, access to these higher areas is
poor from the Wenas Creek drainage. The best way in from this side is by
driving through the Oak Creek Game Range entrance upstream from the
washed out Hardy Canyon bridge ( the reason for the DETOUR signs). The
birding here can be excellent, this is where Jason Starfire and crew
found the LEAST FLYCATCHER, RED-EYED VIREO, and the AMERICAN REDSTART.
This road is passable for most higher clearance two wheel drive vehicles.
The roads in from the Naches River that lead to Canteen Flats or the head
of Cow Canyon are apparently in very good shape, we saw two-wheel drive
pickups pulling travel trailers coming up both of these roads.
Dry Creek, left at the entrance to the campground, is good for
POORWILL and FLAMMULATED OWL, the grove of trees at the lower end of this
canyon is where the BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER was found.
Hog Ranch meadows had nesting LINCOLN'S SPARROW and WILLIAMSON'S
SAPSUCKER
A walk up Dry Creek above the meadows or the North Fork of
Wenas Creek above the campground is always productive.

Good Birding,
Wilson
