Columbia Estuary Report - 11/01/98

The CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR was last seen yesterday (Saturday) afternoon by
Scott Rea at SJCR. I made some effort today to find it, but I was by no means
thorough.

All kinds of raptors are taking advantage of the large STARLING flock that has
hanging around the shorebird flats. On Saturday, a tundrus-type PEREGRINE was
working them over. This morning a COOPER'S HAWK had taken over the chore. I
watched a MERLIN try to take out an AMERICAN CROW in Hammond this morning, also.

The weather has been unsettled and the ocean is very rough. This makes the
seabird watching from SJCR difficult. There are still a few BROWN PELICANS
around, though. Thirteen SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 11 DUNLIN and 41 LEAST
SANDPIPERS were hanging around for high tide.
