This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.


BLUE JAYS are everywhere. Starting in Latah Co., Idaho: Carol
Bradford reports one in Kendrick on the hillside on the west side of
Bear Creek; Sue House reports one in Deary between October 14 and 19
in the Silver Maple Trailer Park; Pat Morgan reports one northeast of
Moscow on Crumarine Loop near Robinson Park on October 11; Charles
Swift had one on Saddle Ridge Road on the west end of Moscow Mt.; Jane
Westervelt heard one October 25 in the Sunnyside Addition in Moscow.
In Ephrata, Co., Washington, Ron Friesz had a single BLUE JAY coming
to his feeder between October 20 and 23. And finally, Mike and
MerryLynn Denny had three BLUE JAYS around there feeder in College
Place, Walla Walla Co., Washington from October 24 at least through
October 27.

A THAYER'S GULL was reported from Chief Joseph Dam in Douglas Co.
Washington this past week by Meredith Spencer. Chief Joseph Dam is
just southeast of Bridgeport. Washington DeLorme 84, 3.5 right at the
top.

Meredith also reports a nice mix of birds of Atkins Lake, Douglas Co.,
Washington, including LAPLAND LONGSPURS, SANDHILL CRANES, LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and a MERLIN. On October 22,
Patrick Sullivan had 7 DUNLIN here as well. Atkins Lake is about 8
miles west of Coulee City, just north and west of US 2 where US 2
curves south. Washington DeLorme 84, CD-5.

Two BONAPARTE'S GULLS were at Mann Lake, near Lewiston, Nez Perce Co.,
Idaho on October 29 according to Deb Beutler. Last Sat, October 24, I
saw 6 BONAPARTE'S there, as well as 13 TUNDRA SWANS and 6 DUNLIN. To
get there from the north side of Lewiston, take US 12 across the river
and take the first left toward East Lewiston, and immediately turn
left on to East Main Street. Follow it to the blinking yellow light
and turn right onto Lapwai (aka Lindsay Creek) Road. Follow Lindsay
Creek until it ends at Grelle Avenue. Turn left onto Grelle, and just
after Grelle makes a sharp right turn, turn left onto Powers Avenue.
Follow Powers straight to the reservoir, about 1.3 miles. Idaho
DeLorme 54, A-1.

Also in Lewiston was a single AMERICAN TREE SPARROW at the big levy
pond on October 29, according to Deb Beutler. To get there from the
north side of Lewiston, take US 12 across the river and stay in the
right lane past the first traffic light. At the second light (18th
Street), turn right and go about 1 mile to the big pond, right before
the railroad bridge over the river.

One GRAY-CROWNED ROSY FINCH was north of Moscow, Latah Co. Idaho on
October 25 according to Dale Goble. The bird was just before the
intersection of Polk and Foothill.

Forty BONAPARTE'S GULLS were at Lyons Ferry SP in the southeast corner
of Franklin Co., Washington October 24, according to Dennis Rockwell.
Dennis also had a "YELLOW-SHAFTED" NORTHERN FLICKER and 2 AMERICAN
TREE SPARROWS there. This park is right in the corner of Franklin,
Whitman, Columbia and Walla Walla counties. Washington DeLorme 55,
D-6.5. Four miles south of Lyons Ferry in Walla Walla Co. Dennis
also had a KRIDERS RED-TAILED HAWK.

And some fun Moscow, Latah Co., Idaho birds include a PECTORAL
SANDPIPER and a MARSH WREN, two good county birds, at the artificial
wetlands west of the sewage treatment plant (south of Staples).
Charles Swift saw these birds on October 27.
