Hi folks,

Thought some on the list might be interested in reading this
announcement about positions down at Point Reyes Bird Observatory's
Farallon Island station. The Farallones are off central California and
are included in a National Wildlife Refuge. "Cool" place to spend the
summer (wasn't it Mark Twain who said "the coldest winter I ever saw
was the summer I spent in San Francisco"?).....

If you get the job, post messages to the list on a regular basis - just to
make us jealous.

Subject: [SEABIRD] Seabird Research Assistants Needed

>>VOLUNTEER SEABIRD RESEARCH ASSISTANTS (6-9) needed for
spring/summer 1999 on Southeast Farallon Island. RA duties include
censusing and monitoring seabird and marine mammal populations,
conducting demographic investigations on cormorants, gulls, and
alcids, conducting feeding ecology studies on alcids. RAs also
contribute to the upkeep and maintenance of the research station.
RAs will work full-time, 7 days a week, with a variable schedule
that includes long days and night work. Applicants should enjoy
working independently with a high level of responsibility in field work
and data entry as well as working frequently with a partner or team. Preference will be given to applicants with a degree in biology or
related field and prior ecological research experience. Enthusiasm
for field work in windy, cold conditions essential. The ability to coexist
on a small, isolated island with gulls and humans important. Positions
available 13 March through 21 August with a minimum 8-week
commitment. We provide great food and island housing.
Transportation to boat in San Francisco not provided. Please send
