We just returned from two weeks on the east coast. We didn't have a lot of
birding time and pretty much gave up on seeing any variety since most
migrating birds had evidently done so. We were walking toward Independence
Hall last Friday afternoon in the late afternoon sunshine when we saw two
Red Tail Hawks doing acrobatics over and around the tower on Independence
Hall. They kept this up for 3 or 4 minutes. We and several rangers
watched, enchanted by the display. Most of the tourists just kept on doing
touristy things. A ranger, seeing our interest, told us that the pair do
this virtually every afternoon. They nest in one of the dreadful
skyscrapers that edge the historic area. He also said there were Peregrines
nesting on the top of the City Hall, along with the statue of Wm. Penn.
Ah, wilderness.
