Scientists can be just as bigoted as any other group. Observe how good
scientists' careers have been ruined by such pursuits as cold fusion
research.
See the article on this in the current issue of "Wired"--it is reminiscent
of the
persecution of scientists throughout history who were brave enough to
suggest
that the dominant view of an issue might be wrong. The creation vs.
evolution
debate has swung 180 degrees from the days when the church persecuted
evolutionists to where nowadays a creationist cannot earn certain degrees
from
certain institutions.
It is difficult to characterize derisive replies such as Mr. Goble's
as anything but bigotry. If bigotry is wrong in one direction, it's wrong
in the other.
Most of us are opposed to the kind of bigotry that results in hate crimes.
We must also be opposed to comments like these.
In light of the above, please keep your inflammatory rhetoric to yourself!
