Back east, where I grew up, when the Chesapeake Bay marshes freeze (which
only happens during bad winters), the GBHs prey on mouse/vole species,
nutria, and muskrat. Here on the eastern edge of the Palouse we occasionally
see a GBH in the fall or early winter. They are either in ditches or fields
undoubtedly hunting mammals. There us very little water/marsh habitat out
here. We had a very good year for rodents so we expect a few GBHs might be
around until things really freeze up.
