Fifteen birders from the ELWAS went on a weekend field trip to Reifel
Sanctuary and Boundary Bay on Sat. On Sun. we did the pier at Blaine, Birch
Bay, Lake Terrell and Lummi Flats. We had 55 species on Sat. and added 20
more on Sun. The weather was mostly clear and cool, temp in 40's. A year ago
on this same field trip we had 82 species. Also in beautiful, but warmer
temperatures, upper 50's. Highlights were (birds at Reifel, unless noted):
Black-crowned Night-Heron
Trumpeter Swan - near L. Terrell
Snow Geese - by the thousands
Wood Duck
Canvasback
Harlequin Duck - Birch Bay
Oldsquaw
Rough-legged Hawks - kiting at Lummi Flats
American Avocet - 1
Short-eared Owl - Lummi Flats
Cedar Waxwing
Northern Shrike - Boundary Bay, it had a freshly killed mouse impaled on twig
Fox Sparrow
