In regard to Gayle Benton's observation of 25 Hooded Mergansers on a
lake on Orcas and the independent observations by Barry Levine and
myself of a flock of Hooded Mergansers variously counted as 123 and 133
birds last Saturday near Ebey's Landing - a glance at several books on
waterfowl suggests that flocks of Hooded Mergansers over 100 birds are
really unusual, but the references cited are old. For example,
Johnsgard's book on North American waterfowl cites a reference from the
1920's to this effect. It would be interesting to hear from others in
Tweeter-land regarding their experiences with Hooded Merganser flocks.
