I went out to check the settlement ponds by the Centralia Steam =
Plant on Big Hanaford Road. Saw enough to know I needed my spotting =
scope. We went back out today. There was a large flock of American =
Widgeons in the large pond behind the steam plant, with a few Canada =
geese and others thrown in for good measure. The next pond (by the =
health clinic) held only two male Hooded mergansers. The next pond, =
across from the huge coal mining machine, had quite an assortment of =
birds. There were two Tundra swans. One clearly showed the yellow mark =
on one side on the bill. The other had a smaller yellow mark, again =
only on one side of the bill. There were numerous ring necked ducks, =
coots, mallards, a few shovelers, and at least 6 Eurasian widgeons in =
with the American widgeons, a few lesser scaup, and two mystery ducks I =
couldn't id. Dark backs and heads with white breasts. Two immature =
bald eagles flew over. On Sunday, there was a herd of 50-60 elk with at =
least 5 bulls on top of the hill across from the pond. They were really =
spectacular highlighted on the ridge of the hill. They bedded down. We =
didn't see them today. We also saw a red-shafted flicker, several =
kestrels, and two hawks I couldn't id. Only feature I could see was =
long tails. They were probably Northern Harriers, as that is what I see =
the most out there.
