Hi Dyan,

To Eugene Kridler's excellent summary I would add a reference that helped
me grealy when I birded there 2 years ago: Doug Pratt's book, "Enjoying
Birds in Hawaii". It is both a site guide AND a decent photographic field
guide. The Big Is. is GREAT, though I missed Palila, probably the one I
MOST wanted to see. Omao, Akiapolaau, Amakihi, Iiwi, Apapane, Elepaio, and
Hawaiian Hawk, and Black Noddy made up for it, though. Also went to Kauai,
which is also wonderful. Be SURE to spend time underwater, too -- the fish
are really incredible!! Try to get to Puu Laau, listed in Doug Pratt's
book -- it is gret place for plants as well as birds. Just writing this
pot makes me want to go back!
