Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This
recording was made Thursday November 12. If you have anything to add call
Harry Nehls at 233-3976.

On November 8 a BLACK-BACKED WAGTAIL was seen and photographed along the
Rogue River two miles east of Gold beach. It dissapeared to the east and
was not relocated.

All week there has been a very heavy migration along the coast. There
have been several sightings of small black and white shearwaters that
some are calling MANX SHEARWATERS, but so far there is no confirmation to
species.

A LONG-BILLED MURRELET was seen off Boiler Bay Viewpoint November 6.
Alcids have been close to shore lately with many ANCIENT MURRELETS being
seen.

On November 9 one or two TUFTED DUCKS were on the Columbia River at
Bingen. One wintered there the past couple of years.

A TROPICAL KINGIRD was near Cape Blanco November 8. A TUNDRA SWAN, 2
OLDSQUAWS, and a ROCK WREN were at Pistol River November 5. It has been a
very good fall for WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS in Western Oregon, but the 11
at one feeder two miles east of Gold Beach November 7 is outstanding.

Several late COMMON YELLOWTHROATS and two SWAMP SPARROWS were at
Millacoma Marsh in Coos Bay November 10. That day two OLDSQUAWS, a SWAMP
SPARROW, and a ROCK SANDPIPER were on the North Spit of Coos Bay. Another
ROCK SANDPIPER was at Depoe Bay over the week-end. Several LAPLAND
LONGSPURS are still being seen at the South Jetty of the Columbia River.
A WINTER WREN was foraging on the jetty November 7.

A large flock of PINE SISKINS, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, and a flock of
BONAPARTE'S GULLS were at the Fernhill Wetlands in Forest Grove November
8. Two COMMON GOLDENEYES and a GREATER YELLOWLEGS were at the Monmouth
Sewage Ponds, and 11 CANVASBACKS were on the Sheridan Sewage Ponds
November 5.

Diving birds are now gathering on Detroit Reservoir east of Salem. On
November 8 two BARROW'S GOLDENEYES, several COMMON MERGANSERS and many
LESSER SCAUP and BUFFLEHEAD were below the dam.

A BURROWING OWL was found November 7 along Davis Road, north of Halsey.
It was in a culvert just north of where the pavement ends. A HARRIS'S
SPARROW was nearby along Green Valley Road near the railroad tracks.

Two CATTLE EGRETS were seen November 8 along High Pass Road west of
Junction City. A CHIPPING SPARROW was along nearby Alvadore Road the same
day.

Birds are beginning to gather at the Columbia River Dams. On November 7 a
COMMON LOON and 120 WESTERN GREBES were at Hood River, and 200 WESTERN
GREBES and a flock of BONAPARTE'S GULLS were at John Day Dam.

Snow now covers the ground in the Klamath Basin concentrating the birds.
On November 7 twelve SHORT-EARED OWLS were north of Stateline Road. A
SNOW BUNTING was in the same area November 4.

Three TRUMPETER SWANS and a male EURASIAN WIGEON were at Summer Lake
November 5.

Thats it for this week.
