Yesterday afternoon I was collecting sediments several hundred yards west of
West Point and saw two brown pelicans bobbing around, a few hours after
seeing a number of Dall porpoises, murres, western grebes, and assorted
gulls. Gray whales were reported from Blake Island and south Bainbridge, but
we saw none. Live invertebrates were the highlight for me, seeing live
specimens of phoronids, and the gammarid amphipods Pardalisca tenuipes and
Byblis millsi. But the pelicans were an added treat!

A few days ago I followed up on the reported barred owl near the visitor's
center in Discovery Park; thanks for the posting, we found it after about 30
minutes of searching around dusk. It sat about ten feet from us, and finally
we walked away.
