Andrew Emlen will be coordinating a new count along the Columbia River
and centered on the community of Clifton, Clatsop Co., OR. The area
covers new growth Douglas-fir forests of Wahkiakum Co., WA to the north,
Brownsmead pastureland to the west, most of the Lewis & Clark Wildlife
Refuge and Puget Island in the Columbia River and Nicolai Mountain to the
south.

The combination of Columbia River wetland/estuary and Coast Range
habitats holds the promise of species ranging from high altitude Coast
Range species (Rosy Finch, Gray Jay) to near coast winter species (swans,
egrets, winter shorebirds). There's every reason to believe that the Bald
Eagle and Peregrine Falcon counts will rival Sauvie Island and Klamath Falls.

The coolest thing about this count is the potential to get out on the
islands of the Lewis & Clark National Wildlife Refuge. Canoes or kayaks will
be available to selected groups. There's even the possibility that the
refuge jet boat may be used.
