WESTPORT SEABIRDS 1999 offshore trips

Grays Canyon trips - January 23; March 13; May 2; July 10, 24; August
7,
14, 21, 28; September 4, 11, 12, 25; October 9, 10

Deepwater trip * - April 24

Dates are set for trips off Grays Harbor, Washington, identifying and
censusing marine birds and mammals found seasonally over the continental
shelf
and offshore waters. We have been studying seabirds off Washington and much
of the North Pacific since 1966 and are ready to show you the oceanic
birds.
Species' main seasons of occurrence vary, roughly like this:

Possible/probable all season: Black-footed Albatross, Northern Fulmar,
Pink-
footed and Sooty shearwaters, Fork-tailed Storm Petrel, Pomarine and
Parastic
jaegers, Black-legged Kittiwake, Sabine's Gull, Common Murre, Pigeon
Guillemot, Marbled Murrelet, Cassin's and Rhinoceros auklets and Tufted
Puffin. Laysan Albatross and Flesh-footed Shearwater are possible, and
Xantus'
Murrelet is a "maybe". Laysan Albatross sightings have increased during
recent
years, including summer birds in 1996, and Manx Shearwater has occurred
several times in the 1990s.
Possible September-October: Short-tailed Shearwater and Ancient Murrelet.
Mid-August-October: Buller's Shearwater and South Polar Skua (which can
occur
as early as July).
Most likely in July-August: Leach's Storm Petrel and Long-tailed Jaeger.
Most likely in May and July-September: Red-necked Phalarope and Arctic
Tern.
July-October: Red Phalarope.
Other possibilities: We look for Pterodroma petrels like Murphy's and
Mottled
petrels, of course, particularly on the Deepwater trips. Marine mammals
are
most likely in May and October, though this is quite variable. On all trips
rarities and even birds new to Washington are possible and looked- for.

Loons, cormorants, Brown Pelicans, sea ducks, several species of gulls,
Caspian and Common terns, shorebirds, migrant landbirds, fur seals,
porpoises,
whales, sea turtles, sharks and other animals are also seen in season. Not
all
species occur on every trip, but species variety is usually good!

Sea conditions, visibility and weather may vary greatly. (Note that even on
the best of days, this is a physically tiring experience: maintaining one's
balance is essential.) Photography is usually possible. Seasickness can
occur.
Most trips leave about 6 a.m. and return about 4 p.m.

Early reservations are necessary - many trips fill weeks before the date,
and
group reservations may fill trips very early in the season. Send check for
$70
per person (* deepwater trips are $120 per person). Please make checks
payable
to Westport Seabirds. Confirmation will be sent within a few days.
Additional
trips may be schedule for groups and extra places may be available then -
