Columbia Estuary Report - 11/22/98

Another disappointing storm series...

The combination of high water and high weather blew in about 15 BONAPART'S
GULLS to Wireless Rd on Friday. A FRANKLIN'S GULL was at Wireless on
Saturday.

Numbers of shorebirds between Sunset and Del Rey Beach accesses was down.
About 160 DUNLIN, 450 SANDERLING and a single dead NORTHERN FULMAR were seen.
Two SNOW BUNTINGS were just north of the Del Rey access.

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was at the Astoria Airport sparrow patch.

There were plenty of interesting things to see on Sunday in the flooded
fields around Brownsmead not the least of which was a GARGANEY (see separate
post).

Just about every possible sub-species of CANADA GOOSE was represented including
a small flock of ALEUTIANS on Jackson Rd. and about 20 CACKLERS on the Ziak
refuge, one with a Yellow collar (Y.?0A). It's always hard to know what's real
and what's not around the Ziak property, but along with they uncountable EMPEROR
GEESE, there was a single SNOW GOOSE, 2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and several
more TUNDRA SWANS than can be accounted for from the usual Ziak pet list.

Also on Jackson Rd was a LESSER YELLOWLEGS with 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS.
