Georg Wilhelm Steller was a German zoologist who lived from 1709-46. He
as a member of Vitus Bering's Arctic expedition in 1740, and was listed
as ship's surgeon and mineralogist. The expedition explored the Alaska
mainland. Steller is reported to have been the first European to set
foot in Alaska. He collected birds including the jay later given his
name, and observed the eagle also given his name. After returning to
Kamchatka, their departure point, he died in 1742 while traveling
