A great book about Steller is "Where the Sea Breaks its Back" by Corey Ford,
published in 1966. He was on Virus Bering's voyage to Alaska in 1741.
Steller only spent about 10 hours on Alaskan soil during a single day. On
the way back, the ship Steller was on was wrecked on a an island in the
Bering Sea, where they spent the winter. Ford's book is taken from
Steller's journals.
