I did my monthly bird census at the Steigerwald lake N.W.R. near
Washougal, in Clark County, on Sunday. The birds of note were: 1 COMMON
LOON, 20 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 3 CINNAMON TEAL, 1 ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK, a flock of 17 COMMON SNIPE, 2 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 2 WHITE-BREASTED
NUTHATCHES, and a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT. I have never seen a Cinnamon Teal
this late in the year at the Refuge during the twenty-three years that I
have birded there. The nuthatches were in their usual spot in the
cottonwood forest, apparently these birds are unaware that they should be
a mile away in the oaks on the hill above the Refuge.
