Unlike many European names, Steller is transliterated into the Cyrillic
alphabet without modifications, and will remain the same when transliterated
back into the Roman alphabet by speakers of most European languages. The
spelling problem in America is.... well, a spelling problem!

As Tully says, Steller's short but stellar career was passed almost entirely
in Russia. Most of the materials on him are in Russian, and those in other
languages that have any substance draw heavily on the Russian sources.

Years ago I did some reading about Steller. I vaguely remember concluding
that the spelling problem came from Russian transliterations of his name --
followed by re-transliterations into western languages. Steller's career
has everything to do with Russia and most of the materials about him are in
Russian.

Tweeter James West could verify or debunk this hypothesis if he wished.
