For those of you involved in the organization of a birding festival or
similar event, either now or in the future, take note. There are
limited seats open for a one-day (shortened from a three-day) course
on "Successful Festivals and Special Events", instructed by Nancy
Millar. Nancy is the national instructor for the USFWS NCTC 3-day
course, has written a text "How to Organize a Birding Festival," and
is currently working on her third Texas Tropics Nature Festival in
McAllen. She is Director of the McAllen TX Convention and Visitors'
Bureau and VP of their Chamber of Commerce. It will be presented on
Dec. 11-12 at the USFWS office, 735 E. Main St. in Othello, WA. There
is an evening introductory session on the community benefits of a
festival from 5:30-8:30 pm. The nuts and bolts presentation will run
from 8-4 on Saturday.

Space is very limited, so if any of you plan to attend, please contact
me directly by email at randy_hill at fws.gov.

As a follow-up to an earlier posting, the 1999 Othello Crane Festival
will have some Sunday morning field trips on March 28. I'd still like
some feedback on where you would like to bird or what you would like
to see that morning. We have options nearby that include Columbia
NWR, Potholes and Dodson Road, shrub steppe areas on the North Slope
of the Hanford Reach, etc. We're still in the planning stages, but
have Dr. George Archibald, founder and director of the International
Crane Foundation, as the keynote speaker.
