Hello, Tweets! We're happy to report an American Dipper, which we saw
at Hidden Lake this morning. It is located to the West and down the
hill from the soccer field in Shoreview Park (West of Shoreline
Community College). We observed the bird for 15 min. around 11 AM on
Saturday, the 28th, and it was still there when we left, preening on
logs, bobbing, and ducking down into the water.
We've only encountered a Dipper in this park once before, years ago, and
that one was feeding in a fast-moving stream. The bird we saw this
morning was working the shoreline of this apparently calm, small lake,
although there are streams at both ends, which would indicate that
water does move through it. For years Hidden Lake had been silted in,
and it was only about a year or so ago that it was restored. Last spring
a pair of Mallard raised their brood there, and now various winter ducks
are enjoying the lake. In addition, we regularly see or hear a Belted
Kingfisher in the vicinity.
This morning's sighting was a wonderful surprise!
