....................Was at Long Beach Peninsula, Wash. Fri.-Sun. Weather
pretty nice Fri. aft. and Sat. with full sun till late in the day.
Rained Sat. nt, and cold, windy showers between periods of sun Sun.
.....................Several Red-throated Loons, and a Cooper's Hawk,
along with some of the more common wintering ducks and geese at
White-tail Deer Refuge at Cathlemet Wash. One very large Red-tailed Hawk
was perched on top of a fir tree. Drove through the the area, and didn't
really stop for more intensive birding. Did notice a pair of Trumpeter
Swans, and a pair of Ruddy Ducks(don't see these in this area much)
.....................On the coast----most activity seemed centered at
Willapa Bay-near Leadbetter Point. Western Grebes, Bufflehead, many,
many Dunlin, West. Sandpipers, Black-bellied Plovers, 6 Semipalmated
Plovers 1 Greater Yellowlegs, and Sanderlings. The tide was just going
out, and multitudes of shorebirds were feasting. A fair number of diving
ducks further out in the bay, too far to identify clearly.
......................A Black Turnstone was seen, along with the usual
Crows and Gulls, scrounging through the Oyster shell piles at the boat
basin south of Oysterville. 6 Horned Larks were reported seen at the tip
of Leadbetter Point.
......................Sanderlings, Sandpipers, anf Blacl-bellied Plovers
mostly on the beach sie, with occasional small flocks of
Comorrants(possibly Brandts) flying overhead over the beach.
.......................A group of White-winged Scoters, and a few Brown
Pelicans seen at the North Jetty area, but a driving wind and a snall
hail storm, along with the lateness of the day, prevented me from hiking
around much. The storms of the last week have really changed the face of
that whole area. Everything, including a small lake there, has been
filled in or changed.
