Thought some of you that have birded Nome, AK in summer would be
interested in a fall report. The locals said that many birds bunched
up like they were ready to go then dispersed again. My work put me in
Nome for the past 16 days . The first 11 days were in the 50's with
lots of rain. The last 5 have been mostly clear with morning temps in
the mid 20's to mid 30's in the middle of the day. We had high winds
( to 51 mph) just before the clearing.
Common Raven Seen every day up to 30+ at the dump
Glaucous Gull Seen every day
Herring Gull Several seen after the high winds
Slaty-backed Gull 2 seen after the winds , none seen in the month of
July while I was there
Tundra Swan 200+
Sandhill Crane several small flocks and one flock of 72 the day
before the winds none after
Pelagic Cormorant small groups moving along the coast
Peeps 2 small flocks ?
Northern Pintail 20 = seen
Green-wingedTeal a few
Brant 200 +
Common Eider many females some with young just big enough to start to
fly
Spectacled Eider 6 seen one in town
Hoary Redpoll one flock of about 20+ No other small land birds
were seen, not like the many seen in June
and July
Gyrfalcon 1 hanging around the ducks
