The Bellevue City Council is considering a measure called "View
Preservation" that would allow trees in city owned greenbelts to be cut
in order to preserve or create views for upslope homeowners and others
who have a view obscured by trees on city owned land.

The City Parks and Recreation department is highly opposed to this
action that is being pushed by a small but vocal group of homeowners.
Bellevue has an extremely extensive network of greenbelts, most with
trails accessible for birders, hikers and others who like a touch of the
great outdoors in the city. Many of these greenbelts are "networked"
creating fabulous wildlife corridors that stretch from Lake Washington
to the Cascade foothills at the edge of the city. The acquisition and
management of the Bellevue greenbelts to date has served as a national
model.

For those of us who love birds I can tell you that these greenbelts play
host to an amazing variety of our feathered friends. Greenbelts in
Bellevue host many pairs of nesting Pileated Woodpeckers, Owls, Hawks,
and over 70 other breeding species.

The Bellevue City Council is highly stacked in favor of the development
community and seems to have little care for the environmental effects of
their actions. Councilman Ron Smith owns a building company that
regularly builds in the quickly expaning Southeast portion of the city,
adjacent to many of the greenbelts. Only a public outcry on this issue
will stop it from happening.

Please let the Bellevue City Council know that you are opposed to the
View Preservation issue that they are currently considering. You can
