Hi,

No, I don't know what the current status is of the project.Last spring
while birding with Jason Starfire at Shoreview we ran into a person who
was very much involved (and against) the proposal. This person has been
very active in trying to call it to the attention of people who would
like to help, and even took the Shorewood S.A.F.E. club to the park and
gave them petitions to have sign. He took down Jason's and my addresses
and phone numbers, and said that he would contact us with more info. He
also said that he was very eager to let people know that there are YOUNG
people out there, who would rather preserve the habitat and use it for
other purposes rather than have another ballfield put in. Of course, I
never heard from the person again.

I am very much against this project, and I encourage others of you to
voice your opinion. They are proposing to build a second ballfield at
the park, which would destroy some very nice habitat. There have been
several alternative sites mentioned including Cromwell park (devoid of
good bird habitat), where it would actually cost less money to build.
The ONLY reason why they want to build it at Shoreview is because they
got a grant from the Mariners.

Over 140 species of birds have been seen at Shoreview park, and almost 60
have nested there. The proposed site would destroy EXCELLENT sparrow
habitat. I had a White-throated sparrow down there last week, and a Sage
sparrow was seen there three years ago. This project would also cause
the resident Sharpies and maybe the Coopers Hawks to find somewhere else
to live. In short, building a ballfield there just doesn't make sense,
and it would be a very bad thing.

I could write more, but I just needed to vent some steam. I go down
there 5 days a week and it would be a shame, not to mention a very big
waste to let this happen.

Once again, I encourage all of you to voice opinions and let people know
how bad this would be. Its just too bad I didn't know about the meeting
before now, or else I would have gone down there.

Thanks,

Michael Dossett
