The OFO Board is meeting this Sunday, October 11, to discuss among other
things, the future of regular publications put out by Oregon Field
Ornithologists. Several concerns and options have come before the board
from both the editor and other members of the organization.

I realize that this is short notice, but I would appreciate any input from
OFO members (or others who may have seen Oregon Birds and liked or didn't
like something) about OFO publications. Things we are considering are:

--A newsletter for announcements and other business best handled outside
the bounds of a journal (much like WOSNews).
--The cost of production, including how much to pay a production team and
ways to get better marketing.
--The cost of graphics--we set forth this year to improve photo quality by
using a more expensive printing process. This cost, according to the
editor, has gone up more than expected. What do you think about the
pictures in OB? Too many, too few, just right? Would a couple of pages
of a gallery be acceptable. What about the front cover picture?
--The amount of money we spend on OB. A great majority of the membership
dues for OFO goes to Oregon Birds. Are we spending the money in the right
place? Could we do more to actively support research? Would be better
served focusing our dollars elsewhere.
--Are there things in Oregon Birds that you would like to see more or less
of?

Please take some time and think about these issues.
I will print out any and all responses and carry them to the board on
Sunday (please e-mail them by Saturday, Oct. 10, 5 pm).

If you want to think longer, or have other ideas, please keep them coming
as we will make decisions about the future of OFO publications in
December. I will announce the meeting time and place as soon as I know.
