Today (10-10-98), I led a trip to the Steigerwald Lake Refuge, at
the mouth of the Gorge in Clark County. This was a trip celebrating
National Refuge Week and the acquisition of 50 acres by the Columbia
Land Trust to be added to the Refuge. the monies for this project were
donated by two generous families, Ray Hickey, owner of Tidewater Barge
Lines and Clinton and Gloria Johns of the C.E. Johns Company.
Birds seen included 1GREAT EGRET, 51 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE,
2 BARN OWLS, and 23 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS. The meadowlarks apparently just
came down the Gorge in the afternoon, I hadn't seen them during my nearly
daily visits during the last week or when I scouted the area this
morning.
1 RUDDY DUCK was on the Washougal Sewage lagoons along with the
now resident LESSER SCAUP. These ducks began breeding on the Refuge a
couple of years ago and now include about eight birds.
