Four of us birded the island on a cloudy, cool, windy, but no rain day. We
saw/heard 38 species. We had excellent looks thru scope at a PILEATED
WOODPECKER (1st we have seen there since 6/97), MERLIN, PEREGRINE FALCON, and
a light phase RED-TAILED HAWK with its wings spread. Also, an AMERICAN
BITTERN, heard both a Virginia Rail which responded to a Sora tape and a SORA
which then responded to the VIRA. Two NORTHERN HARRIER, one kept diving on a
HOODED MERGANSER but finally gave up after no success. It was interesting
watching this cat and mouse game and glad the HOME survived. Also two male
BELTED KINGFISHER, and LINCOLN'S and GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS. Birds that were
back in large numbers were BONAPARTE'S GULLS, NORTHERN SHOVELER, AMERICAN
COOT, AMERICAN WIGEON and RUDDY DUCK. We saw a few NORTHERN PINTAIL, and
GREEN-WINGED TEAL . Also stopped at Everett public boat launch and saw 3 more
species, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, WESTERN GREBE (1), and GADWALL.
