I think I might have seen this same kettle in the vicinity of Cafe
Flora/Arboretum Heights around 2. I first saw a big hawk gliding low over
Flora, but my raptor identification sucks, and I can only tell you it was a
large, dark, hawk-shaped bird against a grey sky. When I looked again
several moments later, the sky to the northwest was filled with big dark
birds, I'd guess about ten, circling high above the back side of Capitol
Hill.

The backyard was full of activity this morning...a band of Golden Crowned
Kinglets, a loud and insistent Song Sparrow, several Bewick's Wrens
(attracted by the insistent calling of the Song Sparrow), Dark-eyed Juncos,
a Steller's Jay, a squadron of Black Capped Chickadees, House Finches, and
what I think might have been a Townsend's Warbler, travelling with the
kinglets. The latter was definitely not a kinglet. The latter might have
been a pair.

Lest I forget and you be spared: The Arboretum Park Preservation Coalition
is hosting a rally/teach-in in Washington Park Sunday, October 18, at 1:00
pm. We'll meet in the Pinetum, which is just west of the Wilcox footbridge.
The Wilcox footbridge is the one footbridge over Lake Washington Boulevard.
There is a parking lot just north of the footbridge. We'll walk the
Arboretum and give you an informed presentation of the proposed changes to
Washington Park...it's an on-the-ground look at parking lot and building
sites.
