speaking of noisy peregrines, this afternoon, shortly after 100pm,
i was walking around on south campus and talking to a friend,
when my bird-radar ears picked up -- very faintly -- the old
familiar "kek-kek-kek!" of a peregrine falcon. i automatically
stopped in midstride, forgetting the conversation, and said, "i
hear a peregrine falcon."

"huh?" my friend looked at me as though i had reported seeing a
ghost. i peered skyward and found the peregrine, a sharp black
form against the soft grey sky, soaring and dipping over a
red-tailed hawk, screaming as she plunged toward the hovering
invader. i watched as the hawk slowly floated westward, with the
agitated falcon bouncing along in pursuit.

i assume that this peregrine was freeway, although i am not certain
of that.
