This is a short trip report from a trip to Washington and Canada (28th =
June-02nd August 1998 - I know, it's already a long time ago, sorry). We =
(5 belgian birders) hired a car and made a 11.000 km trip, visiting the =
following places: Mount Rainier, Mt. St.Helens, Nisqually, Dungeness, =
Olympic NP, Cape Flattery, Bellingham (boat trip to see Killer Whales)/ =
B.C.: Manning park - Okanagan valley - mt. Revelstoke- Banff NP/ =
Alberta: Jasper NP - Calgary area - Brooks area - Tilley marshes - =
Wardlow-Cessford - Dinosaur park - Onefour area /Sask.: Cypress hills/
Manitoba: PR 506 - Whiteshell PP - Birdriver - Delta marsh - Twin lakes =
beach- Oak Hammock marsh - Matheson Island - Island park (Portage la =
prairie),
plus way back through North Dakota and Montana (Elwell lake), N. Idaho =
and Washington to spend our last day at Westport
Of course, many places were visited for only one day (or less).
Total of species: 286 (207 new to me, having already seen some =
'Americans' in Europe (Bairds, least sandp., ring-b. gull, pied-b. =
grebe, am. coot, ...)
Best birds at each site:
Mount Rainier and surroundings (Packwood - cowlitzriver): white-headed =
woodpecker, williamsons sapsucker, american pipit, gray jay, white-br. =
nuthatch
Mt st Helens: ruffed grouse, three-toed woodpecker, mountain bluebird
Nisqually NWR: bewicks wren, american bittern, green heron, downy =
woodpecker
Dungeness: surf scoter, semipalmated and western sandpiper, bald eagle
Olympic NP: marbled murrelet, varied thrush, townsends solitaire, blue =
grouse
cape Flattery: tufted puffin, Am. black oystercatcher, pigeon guillemot
Sekiu: harlequin duck, red-throated loon, osprey
Manning park: pine grosbeak, boreal chickadee, black swift, 3-toed =
woodpecker
Okanagan valley: western bluebird, say's phoebe, canyon wren, rock wren, =
pygmy nuthatch, white-throated swift, lark sparrow, gray catbird, =
calliope hummingb, western woodpeewee, gray catbird, barrows goldeneye, =

Provincial Rd 506: black-billed cuckoo, golden-winged, mourning, =

Whiteshell PP: Magnolia, bay-breasted, chestnut-sided and cape may =
warbler, rose-breasted grosbeak, northern parula, evening grosbeak, blue =
jay, lecontes sparrow, indigo bunting, hairy woodpecker, yellow-bellied =
sapsker, eastern phoebe
Pinawa: Cape may, wilsons, myrtle warbler, ruby-throated hummb., ruffed =
grouse
Birdriver: black-backed woodpecker, northern waterthrush,whippoorwill =
(heard only)
Oak hammock marsh: both yellowlegs, forsters tern, hooded merganser, =
bobolink
Delta marsh: Clark's grebe, orchard oriole, bonaparte's gull, 1000's of =
tree swallows
Twinlakes beach: piping plover, casp. tern, sanderling, bairds sdp., am. =
w. pelican
PR 234 to Matheson Island: white-winged crossbill, sandhill crane, =
magnolia, blackburnian, tenessee warbler, lecontes sparrow, sedge wren, =
Y-b. flycatcher
Island park: yellow-throated vireo, eastern woodpeewee, purple finch and =
martin
Elwell lake: sharp-tailed grouse, grashopper sparrow, prairie falcon, =
say's phoebe
Westport: surfbird (more than 80), black turnstone, wandering tattler, =
sooty shearwater, pacific loon, rhinoceros auklet, brown pelican, =
heermanns gull
The best wader of the trip was a HUDSONIAN godwit in a group of marbled =
godwits at a small pond near the Hwy in Montana (a few miles west from =
Doddson - 30th July) - Is this a real rarity for Montana? (we didn't =
expect it ...)
Apart from the birds we saw about 40 species of mammals, including 7 =
black bears, a grey wolf, coyotes, american badger, striped skunk, =
woodchuck, mink,=20
beaver, american pika, harbor seal, northern sea lion, mountain goat, =
yellow-bellied, Olympic and hoary marmot, mountain and eastern =
cottontail, elk,...
Another spectacle was the northern light we saw near Winnipeg in the =
night of 22 - 23th July=20
As you can see, a great trip through great countries (especially Canada =
with Banff, Jasper, the real prairie,... but also Mt. Rainier!)
