Columbia Estuary Report - 10/18/98

Word is there a still plenty of LAPLAND LONGSPURS at SJCR and a
SNOW BUNTING on the Necanicum River.

Big flocks of GREATER SCAUP appeared on the estuary this week and
there's been quite a a bit of goose movement, as well.

Two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were grazing in the unmowed back
part of the Ilwaco (Pacific C., WA) boat basin parking lot on
Sunday. There were good movements of loons, sea ducks and COMMON
MURRES over the ocean from the North Jetty of the Columbia River.
At least 2 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES were there and good numbers
of HARBOR PORPOISES.

An adult NORTHERN SHRIKE was on Chinook Dike Road. A first arrival
for the year. Buteo numbers are picking up along Chinook Valley,
but there are still lots of hunters along the road and the watching
is a bit hard.
