finally got out to Boundary Bay again today and the grebes are really starting
to thin out now, like they did last year at this time. Counts were . . .

On the ferry trip back from Vashon to West Seattle last night I saw four
species: Eared on Vashon side and Horned (sharp plumage, too), Western and
Red-necked on West Seattle side. Surf Scoters have returned in force as well,
several dozen at West Seattle ferry dock.

Saw a kingfisher perched on wire under Vashon ferry dock; quite a bit of red
on sides, looked to form a complete band but wasn't quite sure.

Speaking of kingfishers, two last Thursday at Black River Slough (Renton); one
perched with red on sides, not extending across stomach, viewed head-on, other
heard while looking at perched bird. Also large flock of Audubon's warblers
(maybe 20) with several ruby crowned kinglets mixed in, several cedar
waxwings, one Hooded Merganser still in bright summer plumage, one Green
Heron, one GB Heron, one Pied-Billed Grebe (winter), several wigeon, coot, and
green-winged teal.

Friday at pond behind Southcenter ToysRUs had a wood duck fly by, with lots of
Canvasbacks and Shovelers.
