While we are on the topic of Belted Kingfishers, watched this afternoon
as a (possibly male) Belted Kingfisher began to excavate a hole in the
hillside across the street from the house. The hillside is the typical
sandy/rocky stuff around Puget Sound. Really interesting to watch.
However, got to wondering why start now? I know that they nest in these
types of cavities, but does anyone know if they use them for
over-wintering? Just curious.
